Efficient energy management for Veiligheidsregio Zeeland
The Challenge
Veiligheidsregio Zeeland manages around 68 locations, each with very different usage patterns. Many of these locations are unstaffed or only used at specific times, which made it difficult to monitor energy consumption effectively and prevent unnecessary heating. The main needs were gaining insight into gas and electricity use, and the ability to manage heating remotely — both to reduce costs and improve sustainability.
The Solution
Together with Aurum, Veiligheidsregio Zeeland implemented EnergyGrip at 45 locations, in combination with Netatmo thermostats. This solution enables them to:
-
Monitor real-time gas and electricity consumption per location.
-
Remotely manage and check measured/set temperatures.
-
Set and adjust heating schedules per location or in groups.
-
View manual adjustments to identify and correct unwanted deviations.
-
Generate flexible reports, for example by exporting usage data.
The remaining 24 locations were excluded from implementation due to existing building management systems or incompatibility with the used thermostats.
The Approach
The implementation came with its share of challenges: linking bridges and thermostats was sometimes technically complex, which extended the timeline. Thanks to close cooperation and strong support from Aurum — especially from Jan Jelle — the project was successfully completed.
There were some hurdles during implementation, but Aurum was very supportive and stayed involved. We now finally have an overview and can take targeted action on energy use.
Results So Far
-
Clear insights and control over energy use across 45 locations.
-
A central dashboard for managers, enabling monitoring and steering across all sites, while keeping control at the local level.
-
Although not all local staff are yet using the thermostats’ full functionality, EnergyGrip provides a strong foundation for further development.
-
User behavior becomes transparent — frequent manual adjustments can signal the need for structural improvements.
-
Savings potential becomes visible per location, e.g. by detecting extreme deviations early.
We didn’t just want to measure — we wanted to control. Thanks to EnergyGrip, we now have visibility and control over our energy use. That helps us tremendously to cut costs and use energy more consciously.
Veiligheidsregio Zeeland is actively thinking along in further development. Some of their wishes include:
-
More detailed insights into historical manual thermostat changes.
-
A location-specific dashboard that shows key information (current consumption, set temperature, schedule) at a glance.
-
Tailored, user-friendly reports that help detect abnormal energy usage.
-
Expansion to other heating types, such as gas heaters in garages.
-
Integration of water meters as a next step.
Future Outlook & Collaboration
Although there are no hard figures yet on the total savings, the main gain lies in better overview and management. The goal is to further leverage EnergyGrip — potentially in other safety regions as well. Aurum has therefore been invited to give a demo to the facilities managers committee of other regions.
